Day 1

Today we were introduced the definition of Interact design. I think it can be seen as a 5D design, which covers word, visual representations, space, time and behaviour of humans. It's quite interesting to engage people in your work and get together to express or complete a concept.

Then we worked in pair and had a quote to emerge from. Our quote is " As you make your bed, so you must lie upon it."

I had no idea what this quote means and just wrote down my understanding. And also i asked my peers about how they understood it.  From all the thought we collected, i think compared to focus on the meaning of this quote, it would be more interesting to do whatever we wanted to do with the elements provided in the quote, such as "bed" and "lie upon it".

We decided to use another meaning of "lie", which is "telling lies", to emerge our idea. Our initial idea was to present the truths and lies together to create an ironic scene. So we took pictures like criminals, holding a card  with our lies and truths.

When developing this idea into an interaction, some problems came out. For example, people would be unwilling to talk about their personal things and it was more difficult to take pictures of them holding their "lies".

So we were thinking about how to make it private and make people feel comfortable to tell lies

We were thinking about creating a cozy place for people to walk into and  tell lies. But we realised that it was so difficult to practice. We needed to build a room! Can't imagine building a massive space in a square or a park and wasting so much time and seeing people just walk away...

We did a little test in the class, asking our peers to write down one lie or one truth.

After seeing those answers we collected, we find some of them were random, such as " the earth is flat".So we decided to fix our questions, making it more specific.  Just tell lies?

Then we find some ways to simplify our idea of building a space, focusing more on the quote given.

Day 2

After the  tutorial, I think there's lots of details I haven't thought about and we needed a visual plan to practice our interactive project step by step.

Where should we choose as our location to practice?

How we set things up?

In what way could communicate our idea and instruct people to join us?

How we set the camera?

Should we consider our outfit to make it like a performance?

I think the those questions do made me think about the project more seriously. Because we are not only presenting our work to ourselves, peers and tutors, but also strange people. So the communication part should be the most significant part of our project, we should really think about the way of engagement.

We Did IT!

Things were happened as planned.

One thing i realised was at communication and instruction were so important. At first Morgana hold the "Telling your lie" side of the board, a young man walked by and said, "oh you make me feel guilty", and then walked away. At that moment we realised that it was important to communicate our ideas comfortably. So we changed it to the instruction side. And it seemed more people were willing to join us after that.

And also, we found invite a group was more easier than inviting to an individual. People seemed more open and easy to talk to when they were with their friends. And sometimes they also showed their lies on the balloons to their friends, which means our work did make people think and have impact on them!

What was more interesting was that there was a man come to talk to us, and the content was pretty deep. It was beautiful and appreciate that. His action let me know that an interaction had been established  between us and the audience. Alice recorded his talking and thinking about adding this voice record to our video.

Day 3

Problem you faced while thinking about communicating with people and engaging people in your project?

-Being considerable.

When developing this idea into an interaction, some problems came out. For example, people would be unwilling to talk about their personal things and it was more difficult to take pictures of them holding their "lies".

So we were thinking about how to make it private and make people feel comfortable to tell lies. Because the participation of the audience is one important part of our project, we should always think what they think.

-Does it possible to practice?

We were thinking about creating a cozy place for people to walk into and tell lies. But we realised that it was so difficult to practice. We needed to build a room! Can't imagine building a massive space in a square or a park and wasting so much time and seeing people just walk away...

Then we chose to simplify the idea of building “space” into a bedsheet and two pillows. And also changed the way of engagement.  Instead of letting people talking their lies, we let them write down and hide into our bedsheet, which we believed was more comfortable and interesting.

How you engage people in your project?

We invite people to be a part of our project and help us complete our idea. TO be specific, A bed was made as they inserted their “lies” into the bedsheet we provided. And at the end we jumped into the bed and lie upon it, which was more like a performance for the audience. They even said “good night” to us.

How do you know if your project has impacted people?

Some people showed their lies on the balloons to their friends, which means our work did make people think and have impact on them!

What was more interesting was that there was a man come to talk to us, and the content was pretty deep. It was beautiful and appreciate that. His action let me know that an interaction had been established  between us and the audience.

How people interacted as you go?

One thing i realised was at communication and instruction were so important. At first Morgana hold the "Telling your lie" side of the board, a young man walked by and said, "oh you make me feel guilty", and then walked away. At that moment we realised that it was important to communicate our ideas comfortably. So we changed it to the instruction side. And it seemed more people were willing to join us after that.

What to change if you have to do it again?

-Our tutor suggested us to consider about aesthetic when setting up. So people may be more interested to join us. They mattered the effect of engagement. For example, If we wear a pajama instead of random clothes, people may get sense of making BED easily and then more clear about their role in the whole work.

-After presenting the video, our peers were curious about what lies we have collected. It is our responsibility to keep them as a secret for the audience who joined us. But what we can try is to make their lies more sharable through adding their reactions to video.
