Day 1
What have you learnt about how light can be used to create atmosphere? How does lighting contribute to creating an illusion of space?
-I think using light to create atmosphere is similar with creating a narrative drawing. The shapes of light can be used to create boundaries of space, therefore depth and unique angels can be created.
-Spotlight can add sense of focus. For example, when torch is far away from the surface it can create a strong spotlight and a dark shadow on the surface. Sense of focus can be created through contrast of bright part and the extremely dark part.
-Colors can be used effectively to create different emotions. For instance, red light suggest a dangerous sense, whilst blue light can make the area looks safe and calm.
-Leaving the edges of the space dark can not only add depth to it, but also visually enlarge the space.
Describe how you have used the following to begin to create a believable world.
-Camera angle: the space looks taller when I capture it from above. And when I capture in diagonal direction, a sense of depth has been created. Also, when I capture the object closely, it would look much bigger than it is.
-Cropping: sometimes elements outside the box has been captured when I want to take a picture that makes it look farther. So after finishing the picture, I just crop it and delete the outside parts that I don’t want. Also, when I want to add more focus on the object, I will crop the images and put the object in the centre.
-Point of view: I think point of view is actually where the viewers stand and in which way they are going to see my work. I want the viewers to be in my world, so I put the camera inside the box and take pictures.
-Depth of field: used to add focus on a specific object and therefore other parts will be blur. I may not use it because I am thinking add some texture on the background, so rather than making them blur, I prefer to let them integrate to the whole space.
Which elements of what you have explored today would you like to develop in the work you do tomorrow?
I was thinking about making a narrow way in the space, so maybe I will continue playing space, distance and depth. Light on crumpled tissue can create beautiful shadows to reflect on the backwall and floor, so I’ll try to use it to interpret my idea.
Day 2
I was absent for today’s class due to sickness, so I just continue to build my world at home.
I ‘ve tried several ideas and I thought the best solution was to be simple and strong, especially for this project. I think compared to the projects we did before, this project is more about communicating senses and feelings. So maybe a simple set of things could convey feelings to the audience more effectively than too much things going on.
Day 3
feedback reflection
-about shaky video: Yes, I agree. What I’m trying to create is a dynamic dream and broken memory. So rather than insert pictures in sequence, I insert some black and white pictures to achieve the effect. But it seems too much.
-Why dispose the idea i worked before?
I want the main light go through the hold of the top of the box to be RED. And also, i want to crate a shadow of the word "EXIT" in blue. So it's stronger and more effective. But when the blue front light and the red light meet, the whole light effect was disappear.
I tried to turn off the red light from above, as there are already lots of red elements inside, and just turn the blue front light. It turns out that the whole sense of narrative is not that strong and the feeling of struggling seems not working.
Also, the size of the door is way too small and it can't gain enough focus.
5 About stop motion and moving image
Things to interpret through moving image can be just a presentation to the world, and it can be a travel in the world as well. To make it more effective, I capture the moment with subtle changes and insert them in sequence. It also can be seen as a quick look through at the images.
-
Luckily, I find I’m fitting in the study environment more comfortably. I was trying to do as much as I can in class time and get advice from tutors and I’m getting used to sharing things with peers. Also, using class time effectively left me more time to try several ideas and select the most satisfied one to carry on. It was a pleasure to me to convey my thoughts by creating my work. But the stop motion wasn’t fully considered and developed due to absence from class and limited time and I think it need to be redone and let it make sense.
But happy to see my progress and I’m on the right track!
