Charlie Brown

Charles (Charlie) Brown is the main character in the Peanuts comics and cartoons. A lovable guy who is dominated by insecurities, Charlie Brown is often ridiculed and taken advantage of by his peers. Charlie is often humiliated, resulting in constant usage of his two favorite words, "Good Grief!" This leads me to conclude that Charlie Brown was suffering from Avoidant Personality Disorder(APD). People with APD are anxious about everyday situations. They constantly feel inadequate and inferior and have a fear that others perceive them that way. In addition, people diagnosed with Avoidant Personality Disorder have a small circle of close friends and are inept in social situations.

Though lovable and endearing, Charlie Brown has gone undiagnosed for far too long. His many “psychiatric help” sessions with Lucy beg us to question his psyche. People with Avoidant Personality Disorder think obsessively about their own shortcomings. Though seemingly optimistic, Charlie is often dominated by his insecurities and overwhelmed by his “terrible case of bad luck.” He constantly feels like people are picking on him, even when they are not, and this, in turn, affects his ability to become close friends with people, in fear of being rejected.

In this strip, Charlie Brown hided behind Mr.Sack and has gain respect and admiration from his peers which he has never gained before.  This shows the pathetic side of his personality. Hiding behind another person he himself created is a behaviour of self-deception. It also shows his desire of running away from himself, which is like trying to run away from responsibilities and social relationships in real world.

I've noticed the word "rash", which is a disease. Sometimes disease could provide a perfect reason for us to run away from messy social relationships and hiding behind it could make us feel "safety". This could be a concept to be worked on.

This strip shows Linus's insecurity, which i find really interesting. His blue blanket could be developed into visual language. And also, exploring people's insecurity issue could be one of the concepts as everyone's insecure. It could be a collection of things that make people feel safe.

The end of the world

maxresdefault.jpg

This is a scene from a TV series called The End of the F*** World, where the two main characters are both kind of people who are being aside. They can't fit in anywhere so they choose to run away from where they were living.

I think it is quite inspiring because Charlie Brown is also that kind of person who is like always living at the edge of the world and finds himself never fit in anywhere. Sometimes he wants to leave where he's living, but there's no place to go. Also the sea in front them gives me a strong sense and i think it is very potential to be developed into a visual language with sense of consistency.

Borderline Personality Disorder

Being prone to fear that other people might leave them. This can cause them to make frantic efforts to avoid being abandoned by other people.

  • Being very unsure about themselves – not really knowing who they are or what to think about themselves.
  • Experiencing short-lived but intense emotional ‘lows’ or times of irritability or anxiety. This is usually only for a few hours at a time but sometimes this can last longer.
  • Experiencing a persistent feeling of being ‘empty’ inside.
  • Having an unstable or dysfunctional self-image or a distorted sense of self (how one feels about one’s self)
  • Feelings of isolation, boredom and emptiness

  • A persistent fear of abandonment and rejection, including extreme emotional reactions to real and even perceived abandonment
  • Intense, highly changeable moods that can last for several days or for just a few hours
  • Strong feelings of anxiety, worry and depression
  • One of the ironies of this disorder is that people with BPD may crave closeness, but their intense and unstable emotional responses tend to alienate others, causing long-term feelings of isolation.

Sometimes people with BPD view themselves as fundamentally bad or unworthy. They may feel bored, empty, or unfairly misunderstood or mistreated, and they have little idea who they are.

People with BPD, however, must shift back and forth between good and bad states. If they are in a bad state, for example, they have no awareness of the good state.

  • Markedly disturbed sense of identity
  • Splitting (black and white thinking)
  • Unstable and chaotic interpersonal relationships
  • Distorted self-imagine
  • Dissociation

People with BPD are often exceptionally enthusiastic, idealistic, joyful, and loving.

However, they may feel overwhelmed by negative emotions ("anxiety, depression, guilt/shame, worry, anger, etc.").

People with BPD are also especially sensitive to feelings of rejection, criticism, isolation, and perceived failure.

"Every day is a struggle: the battle in my mind between wanting to die to end the pain, and trying to survive to overcome the trauma of the past and live a decent life. In an instant, emotions can go from one extreme to another and it can take a very, very long time for the intense distress to come back down to the normal emotional baseline. It’s all about tolerating the distress – how can one who has never learned to self-soothe know how to tolerate extreme distress without behaving in extreme ways?"

"It’s a wrestle, but the key opponent is me. I am officially my own worst enemy, and every single day I put up a valiant attack against myself and my weaknesses – beating myself up for every shortcoming I perceive to be there and every mistake I know full well I am making, yet feel unable to stop making."

Barnum Effect

The Barnum effect, also called the Forer effect, is a common psychological phenomenon whereby individuals give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically to them, that are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people.

  1. You have a great need for other people to like and admire you.
  2. You have a tendency to be critical of yourself.
  3. You have a great deal of unused capacity which you have not turned to your advantage.
  4. While you have some personality weaknesses, you are generally able to compensate for them.
  5. Your sexual adjustment has presented problems for you.
  6. Disciplined and self-controlled outside, you tend to be worrisome and insecure inside.
  7. At times you have serious doubts as to whether you have made the right decision or done the right thing.
  8. You prefer a certain amount of change and variety and become dissatisfied when hemmed in by restrictions and limitations.
  9. You pride yourself as an independent thinker and do not accept others' statements without satisfactory proof.
  10. You have found it unwise to be too frank in revealing yourself to others.
  11. At times you are extroverted, affable, sociable, while at other times you are introverted, wary, reserved.
  12. Some of your aspirations tend to be pretty unrealistic.
  13. Security is one of your major goals in life.

I want to win the approval of those in authority, sometimes even when I don't really like them.

I am too strict with myself and others.

I don't get depressed easily, if at all.

Success, prestige and recognition really matter to me.

Do you love to take care of people and I'm good at it?

Do you plan the next adventure before the current one is finished?

Do you tend to trust most people?

It's important to me that I be admired by others - and many people do admire me.

I am uncomfortable when people want an emotional response from me.

I am skeptical, suspicious and doubtful.

In most close relationships, I give more than I take.

 I'm pretty domineering.

It's hard for me to put my feelings aside, even to get a job done.

Do you always avoid expressing strong emotions?

It's easy for me to accept other people, and they seem comfortable around me because I don't judge them.

Are personal relationships by far the most important thing in your life?

For better or worse, do you compare myself to others to assess how you are doing?

Do you mind taking a risk and really like to beat the odds?

Do you sometimes worry whether people are talking about you behind your back?

I want to observe and think, without giving myself away, before I go into action.

Are you a good networker; know how to make connections?

Do you get bored more easily than most people; always looking for new experiences?

While I am very loyal myself, I frequently that others are not going to be loyal to me.

 Do Rules annoy you?

I'm quite unobtrusive and easy to get along with.

Charlie Brown's quotes

Sometimes I lie awake at night, and I ask, 'Where have I gone wrong

I think I'm afraid of being happy because whenever I get too happy something bad always happens.

Sometimes I lie awake at night and I ask, "Why me?"

The fear of Everything

I think lunchtime is about the worst time of day for me.

Lunchtime is among the worst times of the day for me.

Nobody is ever going to like me... Lunch hour is the loneliest hour of the day!”

Always having to sit here alone.

sometimes, mornings aren't so pleasant either. Waking up and wondering if anyone would really miss me if I never got out of bed.

Then there's the night, too. Lying there and thinking about all the stupid things I've done during the day.

And all those hours in between when I do all those stupid things.

All I have to do is stand up...I'm standing up!...I'm sitting down. I'm a coward. I'm so much of a coward, she wouldn't even think of looking at me.

Why shouldn't she look at me? Is there any reason in the world why she shouldn't look at me? Is she so great, and I'm so small, that she can't spare one little moment?...SHE'S LOOKING AT ME!! SHE'S LOOKING AT ME!

Wouldn’t it be great if she’d walk over here, and say, “May I eat lunch with you, Charlie Brown?” I’d give anything to talk with her... she’d never like me, though... I’m so blah and so stupid... she’d never like me...

“Look at Charlie Brown's face. Would you please hold still a minute Charlie Brown? I want Linus to study your face. Now this is what you call a failure face, Linus. Notice how it has failure written all over it. Study it carefully Linus. You rarely see such a good example. Notice the deep lines, the dull vacant look in the eyes. Yes, I would say this is one of the finest examples of a failure face that your liable to see for a long while.”
― Charles M. Schulz

“That has to be the most embarrassing thing that's ever happened to me in my whole life.”

Absence makes the heart grow fonder, but it sure makes the rest of you lonely.

– “Goodbyes always make my throat hurt… I need more hellos.”

– “It always looks darkest just before it gets totally black.”

“Sometimes you lie in bed at night, and you don't have a single thing to worry about…That always worries me!”

“It’s kind of peaceful lying here among the dandelions…”

Here Charlie Brown is forced to admit that there’s an upside to the girls on his team forbidding him to mow the pitcher’s mound. How many quarterbacks lying on their backs after a vicious hit, listening to the crowd roar as an interception is returned for a touchdown, have stared up at the sky and enjoyed, however briefly, the smell of freshly cut Bermuda grass? It’s peaceful when you’ve already made your mistake and the world is playing out the consequences, without any further input needed from you.

 I’m in sad shape

In my life, why do I give valuable time to people who don’t care if I live or die?

Life Is very long when you are lonely

Sometimes I think my soul is full of weeds

Sometimes I lie awake at night and I ask, “why am I here?”

How do I get into these situations

Boy, what a blockhead I am

You must think I’m stupid

Everything I do turn into a disaster

Why is it that everything I try turns out wrong?

They never let me forget the mistake I make

I wish somebody would come up to me, and say, “Charlie Brown, I’m your friend.”

The harder I try, the worse I get

What a day

Awkward is my specialty

I suddenly have the horrible feeling that I was in the wrong place

I feel depressed

I know I should be happy, but I’m not

I’m already tired of tomorrow

I could just lie here all day

And when I’m lying in my bed, I think about life and I think about death, and neither one particularly appeals to me

My anxieties have anxieties

In the book of life, the answers aren’t in the back

Never lie in bed at night asking yourself questions you can’t answer

That’s the secret to life…replace one worry with another

feel kind of depressed today... Do you ever have the feeling that life has passed you by? Worse than that... Sometimes I think life and I are going in opposite directions!

I feel that it has knocked me down and walked all over me

 POSTURING

Featuring editorial work, it highlights how they use the body and its position to tell new stories in new ways. Through 58 photographs, as well as interviews with photographers, stylists, set designers and commissioning editors, Posturing explores the ways that the movement is changing how fashion is presented.

It is a style of photography that rejects the hyper-sexualised Posturing is a record of that change and this new movement, capturing the voices and visions of those most integral to creating it.

-What inspired me most is the how the colors bring sense of consistency to the book. It has two main colors, which are also appropriate to the concept:new movement, capturing the voices and visions of those most integral to creating it.  It will be not that strong if applying too many colors, which will also lead to interruption. This makes me think of my work. I will simplify the use of color in order to make it strong enough to create a narrative.

A ROCK IS A RIVER BY MAYA ROCHAT

In the long tradition of artists’ books as artworks in their own right, Rochat understands the space of a publication as site-specific, and has conceived a series of works for the form of the publication, taking into account the possibilities of layout and printing experimentation. Drawing from the past two years of her photographic production, she revisits and interweaves images in various scales and rhythms to create an ongoing, unfolding collage in book form.

History Database BY  LUKE STETTNER

Through hundreds of found and produced photographs, drawings, xeroxes and pictograms, the book investigates notions of mortality, the measurement of time (through the formation and erosion of both bodies and geology), and the technology and distribution of pictures. A treatise on cultural, corporeal and academic preservation and destruction, History Database prompts: what is left behind after bodies disappear?

-All the photos included are in a same colour and have the same sense, which bring continuity and consistency to the book. I  like its cover, which is occupied by illustrations of human bodies. Although it's a "History Database", it is not as formal and serious as most history database because of the images he choose, the layouts of the pictures and the colors of the characters.  I like the contrast created by blue and orange. Blue is kind of a calm and serious color, people would think it is a serious book when first seeing it. But as they open it, a slightly different message and characteristic are delivered by those "funny" pictures and layouts.

The surreal photo collages by the Japanese artist Naohiro Utagawa create psychological landscapes that are as fascinating and surreal, as much as they appear daunting and even violent at times.

-The primary source material for Utagawa are photographs which he cuts, tears, bends, crumbles and folds. I like how he reinterpreted the photographs and make them deliver a different messages.

What inspired me most is how the book has been made distribute the handmade sense of the content. He uses handwriting on the cover, which suggests a casual sense. For book binding, we can see the pages are not facing perfectly, and the spirals are obviously beyond the pages. The method of binding has successfully interpreted the messy, handmade feelings of the content.
