Troika’s large-scale installation  ‘Limits of a Known Territory’

In this large-scale installation, visitors are invited to be in a space flooded with water.  You can see streams of water drip from the ceiling illogically, some are frozen in the air, whilst some are running slower or faster. By negating the natural and independent momentum of water, breaking streams into distinct, disparate instances, ‘Limits of a Known Territory’ references the constructed, fragmentary authenticity which now defines our age.

 

Although it’s not an interactive design that relays on interaction of the viewers to completer its massage, I think it describes an unknown territory together with the participation of viewers. I think the viewpoint of the concept is human being, and it’s for human being. It shows how people will react to the space flooded with water, with terrify, fear and unwillingness.  A sense of contrast has been created between the blooded space and the water drip. Overall, people’s participation can suggest a direction of emotions in this piece of work, therefore complete the message to be communicate.

Speculative spaces :In development designs for immersive environments

Universal Everything

 

Aims to explore new forms of experiential design with a series of speculative spaces.

A unique interaction has been created between humans and technology, in smart spaces where are able to record people’s real-time reaction. When people start to move and act in front of the screen, the digital icon on the screen starts to record people’s movement and then act with the people. the interaction is successful because it is the contributions from visitors that make all the things start to work, and then create a world with strong sense.

You Fade to Light

a responsive installation by rAndom International, with software by Chris O'Shea

It is an interactive installation, created with thousands of OLEDs.It is also the worlds’ first OLED media wall.

They developed an installation that allows the viewer in front of the mirrors to engage with the light by moving and acting. The wall is reflecting the person in front of it and then subtly fades their mirror image into light.

I don’t know if it communicates messages successfully as it is more an experimental installation in technology. But I believe that participation of human is essential for this work’s exist. Compared to receive messages passively, I think it’s way more memorable when people take the role of creating.

Flower Obsession (2017)

Yayoi Kusama

Guests were given artificial gerbera daisies and flower stickers to place on any place of their choosing. This references a memory from the artist’s early childhood.

“One day, after gazing at a pattern of red flowers on the tablecloth, I looked up to see that the ceiling, the windows, and the columns seemed to be plastered with the same red floral pattern, I saw the entire room, my entire body, and the entire universe covered with red flowers, and in that instant my soul was obliterated … This was not an illusion but reality itself.”  

I think it let viewers get into the memory by making them do the same thing as the artist did,  and see the same thing as the artist saw: the entire room with flowers.  It left a strong impression in my brain because I was one of the person who helped the artist reappear the floral world. The interaction is quite strong because the viewers are the ones to practice the idea, they also saw the whole process of creating a room full of flowers.

Overall, seeking sympathy is the point that makes it communicate successfully.

DO HIT CHAIR

Marijn van der Poll 

It is sold as a gleaming steel cube with a hammer for the buyer to hit it.  Actually I think it doesn’t have to be a chair, it can be anything you want to create. The idea is very simple, break it to create it. I love the way to reverse the two values.

Following the idea of the artist, the buyer takes the role of creating and put it into practice, which makes the interaction effective enough to complete the message.

Gonzalez-Torres

This work is an allegorical representation of Gonzalez-Torres’s lover Ross Laycock.. The work consists of 175 pound of candy, which is body weight of Gonzales- Torres’s lover. People are encouraged to touch the candy and even take some if you please. The shrinking pile of candy is supposed to suggest Laycock’s dwindling weight as he moved towards his death. Gonzalez-Torres required people who get candies have to continually replenish the candy, which is a abstract way of continuing his lover’s life endlessly.

 I think using interaction to communicate feelings to the audience is quite effective. When they are taking the candies they know that they are taking Laycock’s life away. The whole process is covered by heavy feeling and taking part in it would leave a deeper impression

In a small room nearby, an organic compound in the air induces tears and provokes what the artist describes as ‘forced empathy’.

 

I think the audience are still in a role of receiving concepts from the artist in this project. It is necessary because immigrates are the group of people that worth our empathy. Although the audience is not part of this project or helping to complete something, the project still have a great impact on changing people’s thinking of immigration.

Measuring Universe

“It is a work which is simultaneously about process and product, with a focus both on the visitors’ act of making their mark on the gallery wall, and the shapes and patterns that collective participation creates. In participating, visitors to the installation perform both the act of measuring themselves, and the act of positioning themselves within the ‘universe’ which Ondák seeks to capture. The ultimate ephemerality of the work’s material – the actual measurements – indicates that it is not about what the measurements show as quantifiable data, but about what it means to try and measure the universe through the people who compose it.”

People who enter this interior would feel like being on top of a mountain or at the bottom of the sea. It is also an endless space that allows people to get the feeling of being subject.

2 points that have a close connection with interact action and need to be considered:

-An obligation to have an appropriate main involvement is an obligation to have a particular purpose.

Through allocating responsibility to the audience and ask them to help us complete concept communicating, we should be aware that they need a particular purpose. In the process of practising our interact project, we didn't give the audience a particular purpose, instead we just asked them to do things. Actually we should tell them that we would ruin all the balloons of lies and help them "get through" guity.

-A desire to engage anyone in the region must be ratified by first knocking at the door as the formal means of making entry.
