Adolf Loos'Ornament and Crime'

"In 1908, Loos published his landmark essay 'Ornament and Crime' where he made a moral case for architecture to abandon ornamentation. Loos argued that it was not just preferences or taste that drove people to prefer style in their structures, but that this preference also imposed harsh social costs on those in other classes who were occupied with the work to make a design which served only to entertain, which Loos found childish. From his writings, we can see the origin and justification for the mantra of modern architecture that 'form follows function'."

Cafe Museum

The exterior was entirely a result of the function of the building

Instead of painting decorative colour, Loos used materials to give the structure its colour. Consisting abandon of  decoration, He use various materials to achieve aesthetic and incorporated the materials into its function. Loos worked to make the luxury of the piece flow entirely from the beauty of the materials and the visual appeal of its utility.

This is the interior area of the cafe museum, which is pretty plain without any decoration. Chairs and tables for people to have cafe, half-open space lets light come in.And even the wall is composed of pure forms and were justified by its economic practicality and utilitarian qualities.

The Riot Grrrl Manifesto by Kathleen Hanna

Riot Grrrl encouraged young women to form their own bands, self-publish personal stories and revolutionary agendas in zines, and carve out safe spaces in a violent, misogynist culture.

Kathleen  made the flyer in 1989, when she was volunteering at Safeplace, "Olympia’s long-lived domestic-violence shelter and advocacy organization."

Designed so that it could be folded up into a small rectangle with the word trust on top, this flyer was both a secret invitation and a public announcement, much like Riot Grrrl itself.

She connected Punk and Feminist together and shout out girls should make noise to exist. With her desire to present "feminist issues through a punk rock lens", she focused on the naturally of girls and encouraged society to redefine the image of girls.

Her feminist contributions to punk music are also evident in her lyrics. For years, punk culture was entirely focused on men and "the masculine." Hanna created a safe space for women and girls who were passionate about the genre, making it their own, while still maintaining the integrity of the music.

First Things First by Ken Garland and co-designers

manifesto.jpg

The manifesto was created to encourage commercial artists to share their opinions and experiences to inspire others in the design industry.

"It called for a return to a humanist aspect of design. It lashed out against the fast-paced and often trivial productions of mainstream advertising, calling them trivial and time-consuming. It's solution was to focus efforts of design on education and public service tasks that promoted the betterment of society."design-magazine-8.jpg

I think the manifesto determined Garland's design purpose, focusing on educational issues and aims to establish a close relationship between design and society. Instead of consuming advertising, he worked more on book covers and posters. For the style of his work, he achieved fluency and integrity but abandon fragmentation.
